Considering Microneedling? Here’s Everything You Need to Know Before You Start
If you’re looking for a results-driven skin treatment that goes deeper than surface-level facials, microneedling might just be your skin’s secret weapon.
Whether you’re concerned about acne scarring, fine lines, enlarged pores or just tired of spending on skincare that doesn’t seem to do enough, microneedling offers a clinically proven way to stimulate your skin’s natural renewal process — for real, long-lasting results.
But with so much information online (and plenty of confusing advice), we know it can be hard to separate fact from fluff.
So we’ve pulled together answers to the top questions our clients ask before starting microneedling — from how it works and what it feels like, to what to expect after your treatment and why we choose the SkinPen® device over everything else.
This is your complete, expert-approved guide to understanding microneedling — and deciding if it’s the right treatment for you.

What is microneedling?
Laser hair removal is a popular cosmetic treatment that uses concentrated light energy to target and destroy hair follicles at the root.
Over a series of sessions, this process significantly reduces hair growth, leaving the skin smoother and virtually hair-free.
It works by delivering a specific wavelength of light that’s absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair. The energy is then converted into heat, which damages the follicle and prevents future regrowth — all without harming the surrounding skin.
Not All Microneedling Devices Are Equal — Here’s Why It Matters
Microneedling has grown in popularity over the years — but with so many devices on the market, it’s important to understand that not all microneedling tools deliver the same results.
While the concept might sound similar, creating tiny punctures to stimulate collagen the quality, depth control, safety, and effectiveness of each device can vary dramatically depending on what’s being used, and who’s performing the treatment.
Here’s a breakdown of the most common microneedling types:
At-Home Dermarollers
These handheld rollers with fixed needle lengths are often marketed for personal use. They’re cheap and widely available — but they come with big risks.
-
No depth control (one-size-fits-all)
-
Increased chance of damaging skin or causing infection
-
Often used without proper skin prep or hygiene
👉 Best avoided if you’re serious about results or skin safety.
Basic Salon Microneedling Pens
Some beauty clinics use generic pens that look the part but lack medical precision. These devices may offer variable depth settings, but they’re not FDA-cleared and often operate inconsistently.
-
Risk of dragging, tearing or over-treating the skin
-
Limited needle quality and poor calibration
-
Often performed by unqualified or non-clinical staff
👉 May improve skin glow, but rarely deliver long-term structural change.
Medical-Grade Microneedling – SkinPen®
At ProSkin Clinic, we only use the SkinPen® Precision System — the first and only FDA-cleared microneedling device, backed by rigorous clinical studies and trusted by dermatologists worldwide.
-
Precise, clean vertical microchannels at custom depths
-
Suitable for all skin types with minimal risk
-
Sterile, single-use cartridges for maximum safety
-
Proven to boost collagen by up to 400% in just 3 sessions
👉 This is the gold standard in microneedling — and the only system we trust for our clients.
Microneedling Benefits.
Boosts Natural Collagen & Elastin
Microneedling stimulates your skin’s natural repair process, encouraging fresh collagen and elastin production, two essential proteins that keep your skin firm, smooth, and youthful.
Refines Skin Texture & Tone
It smooths out uneven texture, improves skin tone, and helps reduce rough patches, revealing softer, more radiant skin.
Reduces Fine Lines & Wrinkles
By encouraging cell renewal and deeper skin regeneration, microneedling softens the appearance of fine lines and early signs of ageing without injectables.
Fades Acne Scars & Marks
It’s one of the most effective non-invasive treatments for minimising acne scars, post-inflammatory pigmentation, and past breakouts rebuilding your skin from the inside out.
Minimises Pores
Microneedling tightens and firms the skin, which can help reduce the appearance of enlarged pores for a more refined, smooth finish.
Minimal Downtime, Long-Lasting Results
With just a few days of light redness, microneedling offers powerful results without the need for surgery or extended recovery time.
Enhances Product Absorption
Those active serums you love? Microneedling increases their absorption by up to 300%, allowing your skincare to penetrate deeper and work harder.
Safe for All Skin Types

- Minimal Downtime: Unlike more invasive procedures, micro-needling offers the benefit of minimal downtime, allowing for a quick return to daily activities.

MicroNeedling stands out as a highly effective, minimally invasive solution for those seeking to enhance their skin’s natural radiance and address a wide range of skin concerns with confidence and expertise.
Is micro needling safe for all skin types?
Absolutely, MicroNeedling is safe for all skin types when performed by our skilled professionals.
We take special care to tailor the treatment intensity and products used to suit your skin’s unique sensitivities, ensuring a comfortable and effective session.
Our approach minimises potential irritation, leveraging MicroNeedling’s benefits to enhance skin texture and resilience without compromising safety.
Is microneedling safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Microneedling is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. While the procedure itself is minimally invasive, the skin can be more sensitive during this time, and there is a risk of infection or irritation. Additionally, certain aftercare products, such as serums or creams, may contain ingredients that are not safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women. It’s best to wait until after pregnancy or breastfeeding to undergo microneedling for the safest and most effective results.
Is microneedling suitable for darker skin tones?
Yes, we treat ALL skin types.
Unlike some laser treatments, microneedling does not involve heat, which reduces the risk of hyperpigmentation or discolouration.
However, it’s important to have the treatment performed by a skilled professional with a Clinical who understands the skin to ensure safe and effective results.
Micro needling PROCEDURE:
Is MicroNeedling painful?
MicroNeedling is designed with your comfort in mind.
While the idea of tiny needles may sound daunting, the procedure is generally well-tolerated. Most clients describe the sensation as a light prickling, similar to a mild scratching.
The majority of our clients find the process quite manageable and are pleasantly surprised by the minimal sensation involved.
Our team of experts are committed to providing you with a sterile, reassuring environment, making your MicroNeedling session a positive and pain-free journey towards radiant skin.
Is numbing cream used during Micro Needling treatment?
At ProSkin Clinic, we do not use numbing cream during Microneedling treatments.
Our advanced technique and careful approach make the treatment comfortable without the need for numbing. Most clients report only mild discomfort, such as a slight tingling or prickling sensation, which is manageable and short-lived.
This allows us to avoid any unnecessary chemicals and keep the treatment as natural as possible.
How long does a micro-needling session last?
A typical MicroNeedling session at our clinic is both efficient and thorough, lasting about 40 to 60 minutes inclusive of skin preparation, and protocols we perform post needle to skin.
This duration allows us to meticulously treat your skin while ensuring you can comfortably fit the procedure into your busy schedule.
The exact length of your session will depend on the specific areas being treated and the extent of your skin concerns.
Our goal is to provide you with a comprehensive, personalised treatment that achieves optimal results without taking up too much of your valuable time.
What is the downtime after MicroNeedling?
The downtime following a MicroNeedling session is minimal, making it a convenient choice even for those with busy lifestyles.
Typically, clients may experience slight redness and sensitivity akin to a mild sunburn for 24 to 48 hours post-treatment. These symptoms are normal and indicate that the skin’s natural healing process is underway.
Most clients are able to resume their daily activities immediately after the session, although it’s advisable to avoid direct sun exposure and rigorous exercise for a couple of days.
Our team provides comprehensive aftercare instructions to ensure your skin recovers swiftly and beautifully, allowing you to enjoy the transformative benefits of micro-needling with little interruption to your routine.
How should I prepare for a MicroNeedling treatment?
Preparing for your MicroNeedling treatment is straightforward and essential for ensuring the best possible outcomes.
We recommend avoiding direct sun exposure, tanning beds, and any form of skin irritation in the treatment area for at least 2 weeks prior to your session. Additionally, it’s important to stop using chemical exfoliants and any skincare products containing active ingredients that might sensitise your skin about 3-5 days before your treatment.
Ensure your skin is clean and free of any makeup, creams, or oils on the day of your appointment. Staying hydrated and maintaining a healthy skin care routine leading up to your treatment can further enhance your results.
How many sessions will I need to see Micro Needling results?
The number of MicroNeedling sessions needed to see visible results typically ranges from 3 to 6, spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart.
This timeline allows your skin to heal and produce new collagen and elastin, essential for achieving the desired improvements in texture, tone, and appearance.
The exact number of sessions varies based on your individual skin condition and goals. After the initial series of treatments, many clients opt for maintenance sessions to preserve and enhance the benefits.
Our expert team will work with you to create a personalised treatment plan that aligns with your specific needs and aspirations for your skin.
Are there any contraindications or reasons why I shouldn't get MicroNeedling?
There are certain conditions and situations where MicroNeedling might not be the best option.
These contraindications include active acne outbreaks, skin infections, chronic skin disorders, certain types of scars, and the presence of keloids. Additionally, it’s not recommended for those who are pregnant or nursing. Individuals on blood-thinning medications or with a history of poor wound healing may also need to avoid the treatment.
It’s crucial to discuss your complete medical history and any current skin conditions with our specialists during your consultation.
This ensures that MicroNeedling is safe and effective for you, helping us tailor a treatment plan that meets your specific needs and health circumstances.

Micro needling MAINTENANCE AND RESULTS:
How soon will I see results after MICRO NEEDLING?
You may start to see initial improvements in your skin within a few days after microneedling, such as a brighter complexion and smoother texture. However, significant results, like reduced fine lines or improved acne scars, typically become noticeable after 4 to 6 weeks as collagen production increases. Multiple sessions will be required for optimal results.
Are the results from micro needling permanent??
While Microneedling stimulates collagen production and improves skin texture, the natural aging process continues, so periodic treatments may be needed to maintain optimal results.
Regular skincare and sun protection can help extend the benefits.
Is there any maintenance or follow-up required after completing a MicroNeedling?
After completing your initial series of micro-needling treatments, maintenance sessions are key to sustaining and enhancing your results.
We typically recommend a follow-up treatment every 4 to 6 months, depending on your skin’s specific needs and your desired outcomes. These maintenance sessions help to continuously stimulate collagen production, keeping your skin looking its best over time.
In addition to these treatments, a tailored skincare routine, including sun protection and hydration, will support and prolong the benefits of your MicroNeedling treatments.
Our expert team will guide you through creating a post-treatment care plan that ensures your skin remains radiant, healthy, and youthful.
What's the aftercare advice for microneedling?
After your microneedling treatment, following our aftercare advice is crucial for optimal results and skin health.
- Do not use any other products, including cleanser, on your skin within the first 24 hours post-procedure. Unexpected complications may occur when products not proven safe for use with microneedling are applied post-procedure. Instead of cleansing your skin, you may rinse with cool water as needed.
- Avoid Makeup for 72 hours
- If you have RESCUE Calming Blam (this will be applied to you on the day of your appointment), begin applying as needed after the first 24 hours to help soothe and calm the skin. RESCUE was specifically formulated for post-micro needling.
- Strictly avoid sun exposure the day of the procedure as you will not be wearing sunscreen. You may return to sunscreen use 24 hours following the procedure. Continue to minimize sun exposure for 72 hours post-procedure.
- Avoid strenuous exercise perspiration for 72 hours post-procedure, as excess blood flow and sweat can cause discomfort and irritation to compromised skin.
- Avoid using any active skincare topical products, such as retinoids, vitamin C etc. for the first week after the SkinPen Precision procedure to reduce the risk of irritation.
- Please keep your skin well hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
- Please refrain from waxing, tanning, or using sunbeds for four weeks.
- You may experience some dryness and flakiness 4-5 days post-treatment, lasting another 4-5 days, which is normal throughout the healing process. In some cases, the skin can feel almost sunburnt. This sensation lasts between 5-7 days.
Are there any risks or complications associated with microneedling?
Microneedling is a safe procedure when performed by a qualified and experienced professional.
Common side effects may include mild redness, swelling, or irritation, which usually fade within a few days. In rare cases, complications such as infection or scarring can occur, particularly if proper aftercare isn’t followed.
At ProSkin Clinic, your safety is our top priority. We are fully licensed and inspected by Gloucestershire Council, ensuring that all treatments are carried out to the highest standards of hygiene and professionalism.
